DIY of the week – Printable bookmark

I have loads of bookmarks but I’m always losing them and they’re never anywhere to be found when I need one! I thought it might be useful to have one you could print out whenever it was needed, and these would also make a nice gift alongside a book maybe? Here you go…

You will need
Printable template
White card
Craft knife and metal ruler (recommended) or scissors
Suitable cutting surface
Hole punch and ribbon (optional)

Firstly print out the bookmarks onto white card using suitable printer settings. Cut out using the crop marks as a guide.

Your bookmark is now ready to use, but for an extra detail you could add some ribbon. Just punch a hole at the top of the bookmark, roughly in the centre.

Add your chosen ribbon.

There you go, happy reading!

Font Friday – What the Font?

If you’ve not used What The Font from My Fonts before, it’s THE best resource for identifying fonts. When I worked as I junior designer (in-between making 400 cups of tea per day) I remember going through thousands of fonts trying to identify the one I was after, and knowing about this would have been a blessing at the time.

All you do is:

1. See a font you like (yeah this was in my husband’s copy of FHM).

2. Take a picture of it (if it’s in print, on the web you can just take a screenshot).

3. Crop it.

3. Upload it to the website.

4. Ta-da, the mystery font is revealed!

In this case it was Metroscript Regular, pretty huh? The site actually doesn’t cope too well with joined up writing, but it managed to identify the font on this occasion from just one character, so clever!

Print A Week – Print Resources

I’ve not actually designed a print for this week, oops! BUT instead (and hopefully even better) I thought I’d share some of my favourite prints and places to buy online. If it was up to me all my walls would be covered in graphics, so I’d love to hear about some others!

First is this lovely from Telegram Studio and there are lots more pretty prints on their site.

Pavement and Broken Social Scene Poster by Doublenaut from Poster Cabaret. We’ve got this in our living room and it’s lovely. Lots more nice band poster on the website too.

DIY of the week – Printable Mother’s Day Tags

Firstly I have to apologise for the lack of blog posts last week, I spent most of the week in bushes photographing my new wedding invitation collections, and the remainder of it in Photoshop editing the pictures. To make up for it I have a nice printable gift tag for you this week, just in time for Mother’s Day.

You Will Need
Printable Template
White card
Scissors or craft knife and metal ruler
Suitable cutting surface
Hole punch
Wrapping paper and ribbon/string
Michael Buble CD (optional)

Firstly download the printable template and print out on white card (selecting suitable printer settings). Cut out just inside the black outline, using a craft knife and metal ruler (recommended) or some scissors.

Using a hole punch, make a hole using the inner white circle as a guide.

Wrap up the latest offering from Michael Buble, attach the tag and away you go.

Font Friday – Font Squirrel

I have a couple of good font resources for you today. The first is Font Squirrel, which has a range of fonts which are all free for commercial use, and they have some lovely ones to choose from:

The second is something I’ve seen tweeted about a few times this week, definitely check out Snippet and Ink’s 50 Favourite Fonts, it’s a flipping lovely collection.

Yikes! It’s all change for me as of today. For just over a year I’ve been running a company with some other designers, which has been lots of fun and I’ve learnt a lot, but now we’ve decided to part ways, and I’m going back to freelancing. I’m a bit (lot) scared, but mostly excited, and with lots of things coming up like Not On The Highstreet membership and starting a screen printing course, it’s definitely going to be busy (oh, and I’m also moving house in 4 weeks!). It also means I’ll be able to put a lot more time into the wedding invitation side of the business, which I’m pretty excited about. I’ve had a little rebrand of my old freelance company, ‘Lovely Cuppa’ so I thought I’d show you the logo, business cards and brand new website.

DIY of the week – cupcake wrappers

This week I thought I’d make some cupcake wrappers, you can buy these online but the styles are sometimes quite limited, and they’re so easy to make yourself.

You will need
Printable template
White card
Scissors or craft knife and eatable cutting surface
Cupcakes!

Firstly print off as many copies of the printable template as you need.

Cut out the wrappers, I always use scissors for curved edges and a craft knife and metal ruler for straight ones, but you could cut these out with just scissors.

It’s easier if you assemble the wrapper first and then slot your cupcake into it, just pop the tab into the slit to secure.

Then add your cupcake! These fit the larger style cases, and I’ve used banoffee cupcakes (which were yummy).

Font Friday – Monterey

I love love love this font! I’ve used it on many a wedding invitation as it’s quite feminine and goes very well with floral type illustrations, but also really stylish. I’d possibly go as far as to say it’s my favourite script type font!

Print a week – Lyrics posters

I made several of these bad boys for our wedding, all with lyrics from our favourite songs, in different typefaces to match our invitations. We had them scattered around our venue and they went down really well, some guests made off with a couple and the end of the night, and others asked me to recreate some with their favourite lyrics. I thought this was a sweet idea, so they’re now available in my Etsy shop with your chosen lyrics!
